Board considers ATV trail grant

If the Lamar County Board of Supervisors likes what it hears, the county may apply for a state grant that would pay for the construction of all-terrain vehicle trails at the Multi-Purpose Center.

The grant, administered through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, would provide $100,000 to build a course on land near the Fairgrounds off Mississippi 589. The county would have to provide a $20,000 match.

It's one of two grants the board is expected to discuss Monday during its first board meeting of 2009. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the board meeting room at the Gamble Building.

The other item asks that supervisors give its president authority to sign off on an $11,000 recycling grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. That grant requires the county to provide an $11,000 match.

Also, bids are expected to be opened at 10 a.m. Monday on the sale of 53 acres off Todd Road in Sumrall, owned by the Lamar County Economic Development District.

Some county officials hope that the land proves attractive for retail or other commercial business development.
